The standard carry-on size

US carry-on standard: 22 by 14 by 9 inches (56 cm by 36 cm by 23 cm) 22 in56 cm 14 in36 cm 9 in23 cm
US carry-on standard

Delta, American, United, JetBlue, Alaska, Hawaiian, Breeze and Avelo publish 22 × 14 × 9 in. A few allow more: Southwest and Frontier 24 × 16 × 10 in, Sun Country 24 × 16 × 11 in and Allegiant 22 × 16 × 10 in, although the budget airlines charge for it.

The limit includes wheels, handles and outside pockets. A bag sold as “21-inch” is usually about 22–23 in tall once its wheels are counted.

Does TSA set a carry-on size limit?

No. TSA screens what is inside your bag, not its size. Size and weight limits are set by each airline and enforced at check-in, at the gate sizer, or when bins are full. What TSA does limit is liquids in your carry-on: 3.4 oz (100 ml) containers in one quart-size bag.

Carry-on weight limits

Most US airlines have no published carry-on weight limit; you must be able to lift the bag into the bin yourself. Weight caps are common abroad and on some US carriers: 16 of the 27 airlines in our chart publish one, typically 7–10 kg (15–22 lb). If you are connecting to a partner airline, the stricter limit applies.

How to measure your carry-on

  1. Stand the bag upright with the handle pushed down.
  2. Measure height from the floor (bottom of the wheels) to the top of the carry handle.
  3. Measure width at the widest point, and depth from the back to the front of the fullest pocket.
  4. Pack it first. A soft bag can gain an inch of depth when full.
