Can You Bring a Vape on a Plane?

The battery is the problem, not the nicotine. Here is where your vape, spare batteries and e-liquid have to go.

The short answer

Yes, but only in your carry-on. Vapes and e-cigarettes are banned from checked bags because of their lithium batteries. Vape juice must be in containers of 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less in your liquids bag, and you cannot vape on the plane.

Carry-on vs checked bag

Why vapes can’t go in checked bags

The FAA bans e-cigarettes and vaping devices from checked baggage because lithium batteries can overheat and catch fire in the cargo hold, where no one can put it out. In the cabin, crews can respond. This applies to every type: refillable pens, pod systems and disposables.

Watch out at the gate

If the overhead bins fill up and your carry-on is gate-checked, take your vape and any spare batteries out first. Gate-checked bags ride in the hold.

Using it on the plane

Vaping is banned on all US flights and on almost every airline worldwide, including in the lavatory, where smoke detectors will trigger. Keep the device switched off and protected from accidental activation.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put my vape in my checked bag?
No. Vapes, e-cigarettes and their spare batteries are prohibited in checked bags on US flights. Carry them in your carry-on or on you.
Can I bring a disposable vape on a plane?
Yes, in your carry-on only. Disposable vapes contain lithium batteries, so the same carry-on-only rule applies.
How much vape juice can I bring?
In your carry-on, bottles must be 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less and fit in your quart-size liquids bag. Larger bottles can go in checked luggage.
