Best Carry-On Luggage for International Travel (EU Sizes)

Many airlines outside the US want carry-ons no bigger than 55 × 40 × 20 cm. That’s about an inch shallower than a US bag. These are made for it.

How we picked

Each bag is a “55 cm” international carry-on with a maker-published outside size of about 55 × 40 × 20 cm (21.7 × 15.7 × 7.9 in). We test it against seven international airlines plus Delta. The Travelpro models are listed at 55.2 cm tall, 2 mm over on paper, which the checker shows as a tight fit.

Watch the weight limits

Size is only half of it abroad. Many European and Asian airlines cap cabin bags at 7–8 kg (15–18 lb), and weigh them at check-in. A 2.5 kg suitcase leaves you about 5 kg for clothes. See each airline in our international carry-on chart.

Frequently asked questions

What size is an international carry-on?
The most common limit is 55 × 40 × 20 cm (21.6 × 15.7 × 7.9 in). Some airlines, such as British Airways, allow larger; some low-cost airlines are stricter.
Will a US 22x14x9 carry-on work in Europe?
On British Airways and easyJet’s large cabin bag, yes. On Lufthansa, KLM, Air France and Turkish a 22 in (56 cm) bag is about 1 cm too tall, and they cap weight at 8–12 kg. On Ryanair’s paid bag and Icelandair, the limit is 20 cm deep, so a 9 in (23 cm) bag is too deep.
