Can You Bring Deodorant on a Plane? (Is It a Liquid?)

Whether deodorant counts as a liquid depends on its form. Here is the quick way to tell.

The short answer

Yes. Stick deodorant is a solid and can be any size in your carry-on. Gel, roll-on, cream and spray deodorants count as liquids and must be 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, inside your quart-size liquids bag.

Carry-on vs checked bag

Deodorant: Carry-on vs checked bag
ItemCarry-onChecked bag
Stick deodorant (solid) AllowedAny size Allowed
Gel / clear-gel stick Limits3.4 oz (100 ml) or less Allowed
Roll-on Limits3.4 oz (100 ml) or less Allowed
Spray / aerosol Limits3.4 oz (100 ml) or less AllowedUp to 18 oz per can
Cream deodorant Limits3.4 oz (100 ml) or less Allowed

Is your deodorant a liquid?

Use TSA’s own test: if you can spill, spread, spray, pump or pour it, it is a liquid. A classic white solid stick is not. A clear gel stick usually is, because it smears like a gel. When in doubt, buy a travel size under 3.4 oz and you will never be stopped.

Aerosols in checked bags

Spray deodorant is allowed in checked luggage, within the FAA limit for toiletries: no more than 18 oz (500 ml) per container and 70 oz (2 kg) of toiletry aerosols and liquids in total per person. Caps must be on to stop the nozzle firing.
